Muttaburra is a bit over an hour and a half’s drive from Barcaldine or Longreach depending on which direction you are coming from and it has a free camping area known as The Broadwater on the banks of the Thomson river just a couple of miles out of the town.
It is a great camping spot to to just sit and relax and catch a few fish, although we have never seen the river running there is a big water hole there with plenty of camping spots on top of a high bank over looking the river. This is black soil country so if you are lucky enough to get a bit of rain, just stay put and the ground will dry out in a day or two.The high bank makes it difficult to launch the boat with the hardest part getting it back up the bank. We usually just set a couple of hand line an sit back with a beer and wait for dinner to catch itself. We have never missed on a feed with Yellowbelly, silver perch and Jew on the menu.
Muttaburra itself is nice little town with a pub and a shop and a lot of history, it is well worth checking out. Dinosaur country, the home of the famous Muttaburrasaurus, then there is the Union Waterhole where striking shearers camped and the Hospital Museum just to name a couple of places.
